I use php on all my sites and have first page rankings on several major search engines including AltaVista, Lycos, MSN and Google. I do not index pages with query strings and all my php pages have the .html extension so they're indistinguishable from regular html pages. In addition to other suggestions made here about how to set variables, you can also create symbolic links to the same page with different names. For example, on unix the command ln index.html powertools.html will create an identical "copy" of index.html with the name powertools.html. Changes to either file will be applied to BOTH files. Essentially you have only one real copy of the file, with muliple directory entries linked to it. Inside your code, use a switch statement to test the value of $PHP_SELF and serve up alternate content, such as a catalog of power tools. I have never had a problem with search engines with these methods.
