excuse my following message for it's first sentence.
What absolute rubbish. The primary reason for templateing is seperation of
functionality from design
for instance, we wouldn't have been able to generate 3 new corporate
e-commerce sites in 2 days if we had to wade through loads of files with php
AND html in.
The killer is the breaking down of web page html into design building blocks
which may be global across a whole site or a section etc, and those bits
that are specific to individual pages. Using templates we can quicly make
global/semi-global or local changes. Indeed, the design department can make
these changes WITHOUT breaking the functionality and WITHOUT locking the
files for edit.
If you can come up with a method for doing this that doesn't look like fast
tempaltes I'd like to see it (don't forget about table rows definied as a
single row etc)

Oooohhhhh! Flamebait!!! :)
I don't think it's laziness, actually. I think people are looking to
'structure' things, and that's generally good. I do think that often
times people overstructure things, though, and that's generally bad.
I'm not knocking fasttemplates or other systems - we've used them
ourselves. But as we worked more and more with it and other
variations, it began to seem like more work than it was worth,
considering (1) what we needed to do and (2) the alternative.
