His version is better than the original as far as the amount of HTML produced is concerned. You can see the original script (or at least the first version I ever saw) here, though it is in PERL, not PHP http://www.webtechniques.com/archives/2000/09/perl/ The added benefit of this one, though, is that you can have text on top of the pic.
