Very true. The performance of each system can vary widely--its important do
do your research now.

This is true, however, to make a secure connection one typically needs to
use a third party application like cURL. Essentially this is what Signio's
pfpro client does for you.

Signio provides both PERL, Java (JNI) and binary versions of the client. It
runs on anything for the most part.
One important feature of Signio is that the average transaction time is like
2.5 seconds. I will post some 'benchmarks' at some point as an FYI. And so
far it seems like they are delivering on that (however the site we are using
Signio for is only in development/testing). That was very important. The
documentation is also exactly what I want.
Signio seems to be the highest performing, most developer friendly of all
the companies I researched.
Also depending on what Signio reseller/merchant you go with you may not have
any per transaction fees. Which makes it very attractive to larger
deployments.
I would strongly suggest whatever decision anyone makes, definitely put
price at the bottom of the list. To put it in perspective: lets say you
spend 1 hour a month troubleshooting time outs, or even manually processing
orders. Just 1 hour (and I assure you that if you make the wrong decision
it will be way more than that) spent will cost you ~$100. That is well more
than the price difference between any of the CC transx companies. Not to
mention the lost revenues do do slow/shoddy setup. Or say you loose one $50
sale. That is enough to cover the difference.
I am not trying to say money is no object, just that it should be an
*extremely* low priority when making the decision.
