Yes, many companies exist which can do this. For instance, although
we aren't a processor ourselves my company has information on our site
about credit cards, at www.teamITS.com/internet/credit_cards.html. The
company referenced, Innuity (formerly Merchant Commerce; I have to
update the site) has a few methods of submitting the transaction. The
simplest is to generate a form, which the user fills out and submits to
their server. Your form gives their server a response URL, which you
can set to a script on your site to display a success/fail message and
do whatever else you wish. They handle regular and recurring
transactions, and have a GUI for you to make changes or manual sales.
I have used their service on sites using Perl and ASP/VBScript, but
have not yet had the opportunity to do so with PHP. It would probably
be easier. :) There is a link on our site to their documentation for
the various transaction methods. The hardest part is generating the
payment form using the right variables (and that's not even that hard).
Presumably you already have a merchant account which allows Internet
transactions, so you only need a payment processor which will interface
with your merchant account. My understanding is that virtually all are
compatible.
