http://apache.org/docs/dso.html has a rundown on DSO.
In a nutshell, if
you install usinng DSO then any time you recompile or upgradre PHP you
only need to restart apache to implement the changes. A static
installation means you ned to recompile apache as well as PHP to
implement upgrades.
