Local Search Support is now also ready on: http://php.mirror.nedlinux.nl/ as a test. I will now set it to http://nl2.php.net. Could you change the search setting in mirrors.inc for us?
Done. But the search does not seem to run properly. No because of someone unknown to ht://Dig changed some things on our server. I notified him now about the new setup ;-)
Please have a look at http://nl2.php.net/ and try out the search now. A search on the word "install" gives the following, alot don't you think, almost 5 times more than php.net. Is there a possibility to get less results and to show up the results faster like your systems guy did? Could you ask him for the config otherwise? And why don't php.net uses the same config as the mirrors anyway? 1967 documents match your search for '*install*' on the PHP website And for the search star images I had to create a new directory htdig to put in two image files star.gif and star_blank.gif. If you ask me this is unneeded because these files already exist in de gifs dir. Maybe it's nice to change the search page to use the images in the gifs directory so the few mirror sites who have local search support won't need the extra htdig dir anymore. To give you an idea, the ht://Dig search database at our place is now almost 1,5 GB and took up almost 4 hours to create it from scratch at a very high cpu load of 80% on a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and 512 MB of DDR RAM which we have in our server. This is also something to take care of for the other mirror candidates. A lesson I learned today is to definately run the rundig script at every night ;-) (We saw the performance of our own website http://www.nedlinux.nl with alot of PHP & MySQL usage go down ;-)) This was one of the first times our server really had to do something, nice to see ;-) sirius:/var/lib/htdig# ls -la total 1531692

Some other leason I learned during the setting up of ht://Dig is that the htmerge program needs alot of temporary space on /tmp. We had a small 300 MB /tmp partition. But that seems to be to small for ht://Dig to complete the indexing process. So it's stops halfway. Now I mounted /tmp on a bigger partition so it has enough room to work. But like this there are several tricks in the local search support setup process to know before you can succesfully complete the search setup. I will publish a short manual for you, before the end of my vacation (coming monday) so we can clean up the old info and ht://Dig program sources from 1998. Another question about the introductory tutorial and the faq links. By default the files point to nothing so I created to extra files tut.php and FAQ.php and put them in the webroot so they link to they correct page with a redirect. I used the following code: <?php Header ("Location: manual/en/faq.php"); ?> Am I supposed to do so or is there another nicer way? I heared another mirror guy about this who had the same "problem" as me. Maybe it's nice to add this info to the how to set up a mirror page. And I saw you set our Default Language to English, is this because I pointed the above pages to the English version? What do you like most the "half" Dutch or the complete and maybe more up-to-date English? Otherwise I could link them to the Dutch version if you like. On this way I would like to help you a bit... I put our rsync update to once per hour now. For your information our colocation provider asked us to run several mirrors including yours because they are sponsoring my Linux website at http://www.nedlinux.nl which became a bit more populair than I expected 4 years ago. So they deliver the great connection (They and so we are connected to 12 major backbones in Europe already) and wanted their name on the mirror but we from NedLinux are the real guys who provided and maintain the mirror for you. Nice teamwork with TrueServer don't you think. If you are in a lazy mood it might be nice to see some pics from our server and their colocation facility at http://sirius.nedlinux.nl. A nice thing to know is that several weeks ago there was a great power failure in Amsterdam, and all the systems at Telecity-2 (the Datacenter where our server Sirius is hosted) ran further on emergency power supply's, nice don't you think. This features you don't have at home or at an office with one ADSL line (One broke line and you lose your connection with ADSL, because you are not connected to several Gigabit backbones as is at TrueServer (They now have a total capacity of 7 Gigabit and make use of 4 to 5 Terabytes of traffic a day!!) So I'm glad you choose another nl2.php.net mirror and so are the PHP script kiddies at our place, which make use of the mirror very often already ;-) Kind Regards and Keep up the excellent PHP work!, Marc Mes NedLinux.nl
I will write a howto for you for setting up local search support with htdig! So we can support the other mirrors for setting it up.
I am eagerly waiting for that howto ;)
If you have some mirrors with questions about local search support please put them through to me.
I'll try to keep this in mind...
What is the normal rsync time for official mirrors? Every 15 minutes or a shorter time period?
Every one hour is perfect IMHO. There is no need to rsync in every 15 minutes... Goba
