Hi All!
I tried to go away from this thread, set my machine power off, went out to enjoy the sunsihne a bit, tried to learn for my exams, but either because I feel responsible for the php.net users out there, or either because I think this gone too personal, I have not been able to stop myself coming back here, and express my feelings a bit calmed down.
Please treat read my letter keeping in mind that my intention was not to offend anybody, just to point out a few things, that need to be changed IMHO to recover the good feelings here.
The roots of the problems are coming from the 'new way' or working here as it seems to me. I think this is visible since a few days here, and Wez's big changes are the crown on that. The following what is I see from the situation. I know Wez said he don't care what is visible 'from outside', but every member of the mirror maintanence group, who is not on systems@ sees things from outside.
It seems to me you guys no more treat php-mirrors as a discussion channel for changes. But you still treat php-mirrors members as some kind of 'slave resource' who can fix problems if needed. Just see the post of James dumping a list of errors, and asking us to fix it. I don't know if this is intentional, but I don't like this situation. I have spent many time here, fixing things, adding features, providing support for users and mirror maintainers, and I feel to be treated as a slave, left out of any decision making process, left without information on what is done why, etc. I think I am a somewhat intelligent human being who would probably be able to provide good advice sometimes.
OK, enough for the personal things, get back to commenting.
I'm getting sick of this bullshit. Wez made the server work again, after atleast a few weeks of trying to come up with a way. If this fixes it: great. We can think of other ways *later* on how to get it all smoothened out again.I very much appreciate the work Wez done. But I think some part of it would not be needed if the subject was opened here for discussion first. He said we should respect that he and others spent the 24 hours before to finetune things. I praise this donation. But some of that would not be needed if more knowledgeable persons would be included in the decision making process (like mirror maintainers, who know what is on the mirror sites, and what are those capable of).
Every time before I have added a feature, I have psoted an RFC or asked the opinion of others here weeks or sometimes months before doing anything. We had great discussions here. Please note that nobody provided any information for php-mirrors about how high the load is on php.net or how urgent it is to drive users to mirror sites. We had a GeoIP code lib in CVS for months without any DB to utilize it. It does not seem to be urgent to drive users to mirror sites. Or can you point to any information that was suggesting that? I would be very much happy to get involved, and help in this stuff to get a better user experience and still get load off php.net. You say that "those features are nice, but at the moment are not possible to implement without breaking the box". Hm, if anybody would start a discussion on this, I would be happy to throw in at least one good idea to *cut the URL shortuct apache requests in half*. But nobody asked. I'll now start a new thread with my suggestions in case of anyone is interested in discussions. I am not going to add codes for those fixes though, as I am not convinced that those are the best methods. I prefer discussion. I think that is the way we can make more people involved here, and to get a better soltution for a problem. Please also note that I had proposed a self hosted manual system which would dramatically reduce the load on the mirror sites, while providing better speed and quality of navigation for users. So I am absolutely on helping, I would like to be involved. In fact this is why I feel to be a 'slave' when things are done the way I see now.So I am one poor guy alone, who probably has no ideas, and anyway you always better know what's good for the server and for our users. Should I be happy to left out of the decision making? I was one guy who replied most of the support mails sent because of strange things happening on php.net (which were sometimes caused by me, sometimes caused by others). And also added the load of features to php.net which make it much more resource eating... (don't get me wrong, those features are nice, but atm not possible to implement without breaking the box).
Hm. Wez said we should go and fix the code he added. I don't know whether would be happy if I would rewrite the whole code he finetuned for a day with some simpler one, which comes from a different approach. Then his whole day of working on it becomes pointless. And this is why discussions are used for decision making. To prevent people on spending valuable time on implementing things not as good as aonther method developed with everybody involved.Your words seem to suggest that the machine was on it's edges, and very quick measure needed to put in without any *open discussion*.Right, open source doesn't always mean that everything needs to be discussed in the open.
I have not said that this was not needed. I have not said I don't appreciate what Wez has done. I said I don't appreciate *how* Wez has done it. GobaI am not going to call Rasmus on myself, to let him say "this is not the way things are done here" [without discussion].A dead box is worth nothing, this was needed, period.
