this is unfortunate. However, there is no real way of fixing this; systems@ discussion must remain private for obvious reasons
OK, I can understand this.
FWIW, the load has been at about 5-10 on a 5 minute avg for about 3 months, since alot of the changes to the website were made. We have been experimenting with various cache options to improve everything (we have been running at 80%+ cpu for a while) and increase responsivity. We have been experimenting with new kernels, reverse proxies, and god knows what else.
Well, this was [the high load, the performance problems with the current code] not visible for us, plus the efforts you have put into it. I really appreciate your work done on php.net. The problem is I think that we were unaware of the performance issues. When writing PHP code you have two choices, go the elegant way, so your code looks very organized, and logical, but that is sometimes inefficient. You can also go on the way of fine tuning things which will probably result in not that good looking code [and much more time spent on development ;)]. Having no information on performance problems we added code which was not efficient. If I would know that such a problem exists, I surely would write code with that in mind. Some issues [multiple Apache requests] for example are not that hard to eliminate you see, if the problem is known. So I would be happy to help as I have done before if I have information on these kind of issues. And please also review the proposals sent to php-mirrors and systems for new features, and weigh the performance problems those may cause. That would very much help in eliminating any such issues in the future. Goba
