We could write a hack, which use the highlight_string-function to do this.
A script taking the text between <programlisting role="php"> in the doc and
convert it to the highlighted.

converted to something like

<font color="#324903">$myprogram</font> = <font
color="454537">do_it()</font> ;

</programlisting>
