I see it so:
- alpha: In the first stages of development. All things could change
without advice.
- beta: Stable api, usable software. Somethings could change (the state
that most apps are :)
- devel: A release intented for developers from outside the core
developers of the class who want from other developers to test, give
feedback, ...
- stable: The software was tested, the API fixed, the documentation
wrote and is the recommended release for users and production envs.
- cvs: a cvs-snapshot from a certain date
