If anyone is interested, in a not-anywhere-near-term sense :) -
I have just this sort of thing written based on PHP 5: a Client
and Server class, with a common Base class and some other misc
stuff. The source isn't up anywhere public at the moment for
lack of a public PHP 5 server to demo them on, but I'd be
glad to send it along to anyone who asks.
