I don't see what's wrong in trying to promote a project you are involved in
and spent a lot of your time to make grow. If you think Linux didn't use any
marketing strategies to get to the situation it is now, then you have missed
something. Does the sentence "release early, release often" means something
to you ? Well, that's marketing.
IMO, your vision of marketing is a bit outdated. If you have a good
marketing for an open source project, then you have more chances to see
skilled developers come by and help you developing it. And this is good for
your project. Quality and marketing are often related. And promotion is
marketing.
