Hi!
You might want to check out Seagull (http://www.phpkitchen.com/seagull/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/seagull/), I think seagull is a little bloated to be a framework for a general usage.
which uses page controllers (thus avoiding the overhead of consulting an array or xml some such on every request in order to map urls to actions, which is what Phrame does) This not necessary. You can use frontcontoroller without mapping basedon array or xml. I wrote an MVC framwork as my diploma, and I use a naming convention for mapping. All the actions are grouped in modules, and in url you always had to specify the module and the action name. And the modules are in a specific directory and the action phps are in a specific directory inside the module directory. And there is a public MVC framework, which use a similar way to handling mapping: the mojavi framework. And its authors are much more familiar with design patterns than me, so in his work there some other nice solution. I think it will be one of the most popular frameworks. And now came up the first version of WACT, which is an MVC framework to and it looks very promising. Felho
