I'm not a contributor, but I use PEAR a lot. Now, if "every" package would follow a different coding standard (or even worse: none at all!), it would require that I have to "learn" the coding "standard" of every package I'd like to use. I could see that this would turn users off of PEAR, because some coding standards (especially those from Marcel Lemos - no flame intended) are *extremely* unreadable to my eye. So I don't use it. Now, you might say: Fine, then don't use it. But, IMHO, PEAR should not at all have such an attitude. I understand that PEAR is supposed to be/will be the "greatest" PHP library around. If all the files follow the same standard, it's a lot easier to use the files, because you only have to get used to one standard. BTW: I like the standard and also try to follow it for my own projects, but that doesn't matter for the discussion.
