It is a somewhat large procedure as it has to be carefully choreographed to prevent any packages from simply being uninstallable. The only other possibility (which I have avoided mentioning) is to call it package.xml version 2.1. This would simply add more code to PEAR with minimal benefit, unfortunately.
If I get you right, Greg, you want to stick to XML-Schema ? Do you have some .xsd material ?The schemas are documented at http://pear.php.net/dtd. Incidentally, you can find the exact link in the top-level <package> tag for package.xml 2.0 in xsi:schemaLocation attribute. Greg
