To do what ?
Instead of the 3rd hidden select box, and this way you can send both "select" and "unselected" lists. See below.
I maybe missing something, but it doesn't seem simple to capture both selected and unselected, but these terms are actually missleading. Basically, you want to split a list into two lists. One may be interested into the two lists.
But in such case, you may have duplicate items. If you consider that items should be kept in select from list, then nothing forbid to select the same item one more times.
mmmm. I don't follow you there. You mean for non-JS compatible web browsers? What I meant is the terms "selected" and "unselected" (when refering to the select lists) are misleading. It makes it sound like the developer is only interested in the "selected" list, when in fact the "unselected" may be just as important. Consider that the multi-select is actually a list of items you want to split between 2 persons "Paul" and "Jane". You may want to know selections on both lists. Yes, you could just substract one selection set from the "total" list of items on the server side. But check answer below...
The implementation also doesn't seem to leave much room to more than 2 select lists. What if you want to split a list of items into 3 select boxes...?
i don't see a real implementation of a such 3 select boxes: do you have an example in mind ?
Building on the example above, you may want to split the list between 3 persons now, "Paul", "Jane" and "Laurent" ;-) Now, you absolutely need the selection from all three lists, or at least 2 lists and do a substraction on the server side for the 3rd list. Another example? Configuration of a portal a la Yahoo, so you can place content in whichever colums you want.
More, how do you process the selection, a couple of buttons for the 2nd select box and one more for the 3rd. It look like a bit complicated , isn't it ?
Yes, a pair of buttons between each select list to pass the items around... Unless implementing drag-and-drop, but I doubt that it's possible with select options... -Philippe
