I am still of the opinion that upping the dep from PHP4 to PHP5 effectively breaks BC since PHP5 breaks BC with PHP4. -- Justin PatrinHerein lies the central issue: Does PHP5 really break BC with PHP4? I was under the impression it was fully compatible but trying to check, I came up with this: http://www.zend.com/manual/migration5.incompatible.php So, I think you're right. PHP is an external dependency. PEAR can't solve the dependency BC by installing both versions, as it would do with a package. If users upgrade PHP to v5 in order to run PEAR 1.5, they could break *some other package*. On the other hand, the PEAR installer won't automatically upgrade PHP. Users will have to do it by themselves, and they should know better than blindly moving to the next major PHP version. Signaling with a version bump is an obvious way to tell: "This is only for those who moved to PHP5". So, now I'm neutral. I understand both POV, and don't have a real solid opinion. Bumping version numbers seems the safe bet, but it means treating users like toddlers who don't know better :-) Regards, -- Sérgio
