IIRC it sets a constant once based on whether or not PEAR performed a directory marker replacement upon installation, thereby making the package itself permanently "aware" of its own "PEAR status". That could take the burden off of your package's caller, no longer requiring the caller to know whether or not the daemon library is PEAR-installed or not. -- CRB
