OK. *I* use Editor XYZ which has some funny behaviours. To make it work properly I'll have to add some code to each file, which is fine so *everyone* using this editor with its funny behaviours will get it to work.
My friend used Editor ABC which acts really strangely in some files, and needs a special 5 line comment added to every single file. This needs to be added so that *everyone* using ABC will see the files correctly.
Another friend uses...
See how it can go on? If we do this for every editor then we'll soon have more editor comments than code in the files.
I have never used vim, but if it's properly written then surely there's some way of configuring it internally to set the mode?
