You can do this today if you want. The only problem is keeping your
package namespace sane. You should at least set php_dir to something
else, but apart from that this pretty much works today.
One idea I have been toying with is being able to set up multiple
download servers. That would for example let a company use the PEAR
installer to maintain company-internal packages as well as open-sourced
ones from php.net. They would just have to set up a site with their own
stuff that the installer checks first, and if the wanted package is not
there it falls back to pear.php.net or whatever. This could also be
used to implement a mirroring scheme that is tolerant to mirrors taking
a while to update.
