DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR and packages download default dir

dear all i would like to ask two things: 1) DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR i did <?php echo DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR; ?> and got "\" in return. is this a system variable? i am asking because i did not find it while performing a c:\>env command. 2) packages default storage dir can i configure the default directory for storing packages downloaded via: c:\>pear download PEAR because in that case, the package will reamin like c:\>PEAR-0.11.tgz. but it would be cool to have it in c:\php\pear\packages\PEAR-0.11.tgz. if it is not configurable, it would be nice to have it ;) thanx, urs ps: sorry for asking all this; i am trying to understand why Installer.php (it's a guess) does not work properly on win32; at least at my installation ;)
