You might try % sudo pear install FavoritePackage.tar and see if that works. If so, then your zlib is borked. Debian users have encountered the same problem, perhaps there is a similar bug in Darwin's zlib?
Sure enough, this works. What can I do to workaround it? Install a new zlib? Suggestions?
