However, until then, you can run every install/upgrade command with the -Z option % sudo pear install -Z FavoritePackage This will force non-compression of the packages.
The -Z option is not working, either. I tried three packages (Net_Socket, PHPUnit, and XML_Parser), and in all three cases a .tgz package was downloaded.
