Upgrading the code to PHP5 is possible - the package is not stable yet. If the package was stable already, we'd have to keep backward compatibility (BC) and had to start a HTML_Safe2 package. But luckily, this is not needed. So you can go on with that. Please open a feature request for that and attach the patch. Notify us about it on pear-dev and we'll review it.
