Please take a look at the attached tarball containg the Log class hierarchy
we're currently using in the development version of Horde and see how close it
is to what you need, and how extensible it is to what you need.

gettext provides translation, and I'd hate to see us write a class to handle
this when it does the job very well already...

I'm going to submit a set of Mail classes as soon as I clean them up and comment
them, etc. Maybe I'll submit the code in a few minutes just to get it out
there...

I think java is the wrong model for the class library since in java _everything_
is a class, and not so in PHP. Java is good for design issues, and CPAN is also
a good model.
I also think that either we need to encourage a rather flat class tree, or we
need namespaces.
