To me =x= makes very little sense, it resembles an equality with a cross over it, meaning not-equal. Unless you meant 'x' as in any character.
I think we're best off using
=:=
or
=~=
Any non-symmetric operator (e.g. :==) doesn't make sense to me since it doesn't suggest equality, but a difference.
I also don't think that our main concern, or even a major concern at all, should be the number of keystrokes needed to generate this sequence. You get used to anything, plus, the important thing is readability, not the amount of time it takes you to type it up, which is negligible in comparison. Also, remember that people lived fairly well without this operator for a few years now, so it won't be the most popular operator in the world anyway.

Nice to see all the heart-felt involvement in this matter btw ;-) - Stig -- PHP 4 Beta Yep, I like th "=x=" operator, too. I'm assuming this operator does the same thing as the "===" operator in JavaScript? I kinda missed the initial email that started this debate. "=x=" makes sense, too. :) Ryan -- PHP 4 Beta
