We don't really see the performance hit in the stats Thies sent (unless I missed something). Thies - can you send the stats for the thread unsafe version? Well, he said that yy_get_previous_state(), lex_scan() and yy_get_next_buffer() are all taking up more time than zendparse() in ZTS mode while in non-ZTS mode zendparse() is the busiest function. That can't be good and his numbers reflected that. I don't think this can be attributed solely to g++.
It can actually (C++ compilers tend to be MUCH worse than C compilers, especially when it comes to optimizations). We need to see the non thread safe stats though, if the scanner functions take like 1%, it makes no sense. If they take 30%, it's more than reasonable.
