Daniel Burka made an example autocomplete popup box very similar to
www.apple.com one ( i can't find it right now)
If you see the apple one it has categories like you mentioned Philip.
How about, if the user enters a term and there are 0 results, we do a
"recommended" ajax lookup to obtain the recommended items for that search
term, and if there are recommendations then we display them in a new section
just like on apple.com
