Gerald... just another thought... are you running the lastest 8.1.6 Net8 client
on your machine? I was having TONS of problems connecting via oci8, UNTIL I
removed my *other* oracle settings for Oracle on our LAN (all of them in the
registry/path/etc.) and installed the latest 8.1.6 full client downloaded from
Oracle on my local hard drive. Once I had this installed and I got my service
set up correctly in Net 8 Assistant (NOTE: when installing with Net8.1.6, try
specifying your connection descriptor by SID and not by Service_Name <a new
feature in 8i> - this gave me a small difficulty this morning), everything
suddenly worked like a champ! ODBC connection to Oracle came up smiling... AND
I reloaded the php_oci8.dll under Apache (php4 as module) and when I started the
Apache service back up, no error messages. Then, when I ran my connection test,
everything was hunky doorey. Another note, when you install the Net8 client
locally, you shouldn't have to use the oci.dll which came with php-402dev... the
correct oci.dll & others are added in your path - which is now reachable by
Apache & php.
I have my ORACLE_HOME environment string set in my httpd.conf - using SetEnv
apache directive. And I set my ORACLE_SID under php with
putenv("ORACLE_SID")="MYSID";
Now, I can connect, select, fetch at breakneck speed!
Daniel, thanks for all you help with this... I definitely think this had a lot
to do with Apache not accessing all drive/directories specified in my system
path. Gonna do some research to check on why Apache might be dropping network
drives from its environment path. Probably for security reasons, but I just
want some verification on that.
