John,
How can i join "The 'WKoIUPwIwOoN?' Consortium" do you have membership
cards?
Anyway... assuming you are running NT for your server (that should be true)
i think you could do it via the same VBA functions that make the PDF buttons
in Word when you install distiller or whatever. (maybe try editing the
installed macros)
Basically Acrobat works by printing a document to a dummy printer, so if you
could find the COM functions that create a print job to a file i believe you
are half way there. I would play around with recording macros in VBA when
"printing" such a file as it may give you some clues.
Another option is if you can use Acrobat's PS Printer (downloadable from
their site) you should again be able to "print" to a file (this time a .ps
file) then use the freely available (i think:) ps2pdf to convert to PDF
(using exec at the commandline). PDF is based on PDF so the conversion
should be smooth. NB: You dont have to use the Acrobat PS Printer but its
the best apparently, but any PS Print driver will do the job.
If you can get either of these to work you should be able to do any COM
enabled product as you only have to call its print property so your users
should be able to upload Doc, Xls, Ppt and maybe HTML. (but you could use
www.easysw.com/htmldoc/ for the last one)
Now this is all guesswork, but id be very interested in hearing the results.

Hello all,
I'm not much of a programmer, let that be said. I have a need for coworkers
to be able to upload a Word file, then have PHP turn it into a renamed
Acrobat file. Then have PHP make pages and query an index of the files.
As far as uploading the Word file, querying the index and spitting out the
results... I've got that, no problem. What I don't have is the whole PDF
making thing.
I'm guessing that with COM I could open those Word files and have them saved
using the PDFmaker function in Word. They don't need to be anything fancy,
and all of the documents are very standard 8 1/2 x 11 text documents.
Alain, I know you watch this group. If it wasn't for your article on
PHPBuilder, I wouldn't have dreamed this impossible, so you have an
obligation to add your two cents! :)
Thanks in advance everyone.
John
