How does that work? Access reads the file, but Access cannot be connected to from remote, can it? ODBC is to read data sources, not to export them. ODBC is on the Linux box, and it can connect to ODBC compliant databases, but since there is nothing to connect to with Access, how does it work? Weird....

That's not entirely true. ODBC will allow you to access the Access db on Windows from any PHP machine, be it Windows, Linux, etc. Setting up PHP to use ODBC on a *nix box requires an ODBC Driver Manager and an ODBC Driver. A HOWTO for linking PHP with the driver manager (as well as the driver manager itself) can be found at www.iodbc.org. Let me know if you need additional clarification. Since Access is really only a single machine local file thing, to use it elsewhere you need to load the data into an actual database server. I reccomend PostgreSQL. For Windows users, check out MySQL. I have heard it works well on Windows as well as the *nix's. PostgreSQL works on Windows, but it is a little tricky to set up on Windows (super easy on Linux), and since it only works under CygWin, it is noteably slower than on a *nix. CygWin is very cool, but since it is an extra compatibility layer, performance suffers. zpr wrote:Hi all.. i have a MS Access database file.. and i wonder how to access it from php..? i don't have a SQL server or something like that, is it possible? //Gabriel-- PHP Database Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, e-mail: php-db-unsubscribe@lists.php.net For additional commands, e-mail: php-db-help@lists.php.net To contact the list administrators, e-mail: php-list-admin@lists.php.net
