It's a function of ODBC as to *how* all of that works. Specifically, I don't know and I really don't care. To me, it's like wanting to know *how* a floppy drive formats a floppy when someone clicks the right buttons and/or enters the right MS-DOS command line arguments to commence an initialization of a floppy disk. I know it works. How, I don't care. ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) by it's definition carries the name of the machine that the database is present. It carries the name of the database (or in the case of MS Access, probably a *path* to where the .mdb file is). It also carries any user account login/password data as well. It also carries the kind of ODBC driver (like MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle, Informix, ODBC, etc.) it is. With all ODBC definitions is a *Data Source Name* commonly referred to as a DSN (a system DSN). That way, from about any machine, you can make a system call to another machine's database by referring to the DSN that you've defined locally. Another thing that can be done is you should be able to chain ODBC DSN's from one machine to the next. That'd allow a call to a local DSN (that connects to another machine as a client does to a server) will in effect refer/connect to a DSN on another machine. -- __ _ Tyler Nally / /__ ____ _(_)___ ____ ____ _________ _ tnally@legion.org / / _ \/ __ / / __ \/ __ \ / __ \/ ___/ __ / 317-860-3016 / / __/ /_/ / / /_/ / / / // /_/ / / / /_/ / American Legion Website /_/\___/\__, /_/\____/_/ /_(_)____/_/ \__, / http://www.legion.org /____/ /____/ > -----Original Message----- > From: Grant Johnson [mailto:grant@amadensor.com] > Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 3:23 PM > To: ahill@openlinksw.com > Cc: zpr; php-db@lists.php.net > Subject: Re: [PHP-DB] MS Access file > > > How does that work?
