I've compiled the 3.x version many times with different databases and have
always used the '--with-apache' statement. I'm told that there is a new
method in PHP4 but I used the old tried and true method of old and it still
worked.

I didn't need MySQL so I disabled it. Seems that the default in PHP4 is to
have it enabled to I had to explicitly disable it. You shouldn't have to
manually enable it unless you have in installed to a non-standard directory.
I don't know of any issues with having them both enabled.
You might try Martin Evans <martin@easysoft.com> for another support option.
He was very helpful when getting PHP and Easysoft working on my server.
