Hello, These problems, all of which are elegantly solved by an application server approach, are what makes currently the most abitious PHP projects slow, and lets them scale badly. Ulf Wendel of NetUSE and phpdoc, Bjoern Schotte of php-center.de, Andre Christ and Jens Ohlig of Twisd (www.twisd.de) all experience the same problems at the moment - the problems I discuss above. following this discussion I fully support Kristians point. In my opinion even today there's a huge demand for some kind of application server: Just look at Microsoft's .NET strategy: successfully integrating Application, Transaction Server into ASP and adding useful features like WebForms they have managed to get themselves prepared for the upcoming need of Web Applications. As far as I can say I consider PHP as a powerfull oponent to ASP+. The integration of an Application server like Kristian described would heavily support the reasons PHP is used for developing high end applications and e-commerce shops in future. From my point of view PHP can be expanded to become much more than a scripting language used to create "dynamic web-pages" ...
Except that's not at all what Kristian is talking about. While going with Kristian's approach, you would kill PHP in the way. What you'll end up with is not 'much more than a scripting language to create dynamic web pages', but rather, something that is *NOT* a scripting language to create dynamic web pages, but something else. People should really understand this, as it's fairly simple: PHP := An easy to use language to create dynamic Web pages You can accept this as an axiom, as this was exactly how PHP was born and bred, since its birth (correct me if I'm wrong Rasmus, I can only guarantee this as of PHP 3.0). If you want it to be something else? Go ahead and use/write something else. Don't expect PHP to become something else, as it won't. Of course, improving on PHP is always welcome. Killing it and starting from scratch is not. Zeev -- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> CTO, Zend Technologies Ltd. http://www.zend.com/
