Hrm. Well, that exact configuration works fine for me.
For pdflib:
./configure --enable-shared-pdflib
make
make install
for PHP:
./configure --with-pdflib=/usr/local
If you are on Linux, make sure you add '/usr/local/lib' to your
/etc/ld.so.conf file and run 'ldconfig'. If you are on something else, I
suggest linking /usr/lib/libpdf.so to /usr/local/lib/libpdf.so.0.0.1
