Figured this out, but am posting here (1) for my future reference! and
(2) to possibly help anyone else...
The 'symbolic links' were the problem, in my /usr/lib area.
The 'man ld' page had some comment about ld not liking symbolic
links, although I see them often. Well, what I started noticing
about the symbolic links in my /usr/lib directory was that
there were 2 or more levels.
libtiff.so -> libtiff.so.1
libtiff.so.1 -> libtiff.so.1.0
libtiff.so.1.0 -> libtiff.so.1.0.0
etc.
libtiff.so.1.0.0 was the REAL file, but there were multiple levels of
symbolic links above it. Cutting that to just one symbolic link level
made it work.
Bear in mind that this is Caldera 2.4, with a 2.2.14 kernel, but
I'm still not sure how it installed THIS way, when I had installed
this same CD a couple months ago without this problem.
Anyway, I hope this might help someone else out in the future.
BTW, there are a couple other changes we've had to make to get
this to work with FreeTDS and SQL7 - email me if you're interested.
Thanks for everyone's input! :)
