Your inference is right, in my very modest opinion template engines that
parse templates at run-time are not usable.
I don't know if there're other template engines that compile templates
into PHP code so Smarty may or may not be the only one.
If this thread is about templating engines then it is also about Smarty
and many others... Do you suffer some alergic reaction to Smarty? :-)

By your logic, since you ruled out all other templating systems, then
with this most recent post you have made an assertion that Smarty is the
only round wheel. I'm sure many would disagree. At any rate, time for me
to drop this particular thread branch since the thread is about
templating
engines and NOT Smarty.
