Well, Smarty is not completely non-intrusive. You are going to take a
runtime hit loading and instantiating the Smarty base class combined with
the fact that the generated code is rather large and complex. They have
tried to combat that by adding another layer of cacheing, so for the most
part you don't take a hit.
