What about vim or (x)emacs? There seems to be a fairly strong nedit crowd, but I like gvim. Emacs is
something I've never really used as a primary editor, but has a great diff/merge tool (ediff)
and more support for version control systems and things like ctags (etags?). Emacs is geared towards
the programmer, but even though vim is still "just an editor" it's a damned good one.
There's not much that me and my split-windowed gvim can't do. Either way, both are great
editors.
BTW, I've been working with vim over a smbmount for about 5 months now and have never had a
problem.

I don't have the problems you have with netscape, but you are right, it does suck. It uses its
own GUI toolkit so it looks ugly, and the typeset makes me sick to my stomach. Mozilla and Konqueror
make up on the looks department, but tend to be more buggy than Netscape in terms of rendering and
JavaScript support. I'd give this sector a year or two to mature before writing it off.
In the meantime, you can run Windows inside of VMware and get at IE. Whether or not you like IE, it
is still fast overtaking the increasingly nonexistant Netscape market share, and is probably what a
majority of people viewing your site will be using. I still think it is important to have both
browsers readily available. VMware, last time I used it, was a major pain in the ass in terms of
memory and CPU utilization, though.
My suggestion would be to get a mid-range (400mhz, 96-128megs of ram) box and put windows 98 or 2000
on it, and do your real work on a *nix box. Keep the windows box next to your *nix one and use it
for testing with IE, playing streaming video, etc.. just nothing critical so you can reboot it as
needed.
