I had the simmilar problem as this, the problem was that the RH gd / jpeg libraries were interfearing with the ones Ive compiled. php was finding the old libs, not the new ones. rpm -aq | grep -i gd rpm -aq | grep -i jpeg see what comes up. if it shows any of the gd libs installed. remove them rpm -e {package_name} then re-compile and install the libraries, includeing php.
