Folks, discussing Java & PHP is a bit off topic but here are some thoughts that only experience has taught me: PHP and Java is not an 'this or that' question. Programmer needs to think more like a good mechanic and use the best tool to do the current job. Java is better at doing some things than PHP. PHP is better at others. Knowing the merits and limitations of various languages will allow you to make the right decision. When you are posed with a question you should be able to rest assured knowing you have all the tools needed to do the job. Be wary of the mechanic equipped only with a screw-driver. > I tried using Java a couple of times but I never understood, > what Java should make only 1 point better than PHP. Can you *quickly* get support for failover (including session data)? Scalability...do you really think PHP scales as well as Java? It does in some regards but not all. Finally, support. While Zend and PHP and PEAR all serve a great purpose, enterprise-level PHP support doesn't exist (at least not where I am here in the midwestern US). Yes, there is a flip side to this with PHP merits. But I won't bore this list with items that make PHP a good langauge considering most of us wouldn't be on this list if we didn't already know that. All that and it's coming from an advocate of PHP. > > OO-Features are pretty cool. But do not force people about > using them. When you think about it, that might be a fair assessment." --Unknown
