Hi Stuart!
<snipped describtion of QA-services>
I just know, what QA means in reality. ;)
The problem i see is: Why bring up PFC?
The answer (so I understood the whole discussion) is, that a)
the actual PEAR coding standards are not met by every package
and b) a QA should sign really good and usable packages. Isn*t
it that way?
My problem is, that there will be a few real PFCs and the rest
stays just normal PEAR classes. When in our (not so small *g*)
company PEAR classes should be used, the management will ask:
"What is so special about PFC?" i could tell them "The meet the
following standards and fullfill this and that and that...". So
they will tell me "Okay, you may use the PFCs. But do not use
the other ones, they seem not to fit the real quality." and
IMHO that would not be the real goal of introducing PFC.
My intention would be to have some kind of rating system about
the quality of a package, so that a user can see: "Oh, this
classes can be used without any compromise" (here the RFCs),
"For using this classes we'll have to proof this and this and
this..." and so on. (I hope y'all understand what i mean).
By introducing a kind of rating-system we can provide a more
specific quality assurance than by just defining PFCs.
The only difference between my idea and the actual discussed
model should be to define the quality not only in 2 steps (PFC
and not PFC), but in some more steps, so that classes can grow
into PFCs while working on them.
In my eyes this would be a better way to provide detailed
information about the quality of a package to the user and a
good way to provide information to the developers on how to
make their projects more stable. Every developer could decide
on his own how far he can assure the quality of his package (in
time and knowledge) and an independent group of people will
proof the quality.
I hope to have expressed my point of view a bit more clear on
that (sorry for my bad english, if someone speaks german and
wants to know it more clearly, feel free to contact me!).
Regards,
Toby
