But the functions should 'hidden' by the PEAR-classes and it should by possible to use important classes like DB without using special modules. Short: The first implementation or improvements of a functionality in PHP, then additional as c module. ( in the case of a php-class, not of a original c-modul like xmms) Are you saying there should always be user-space implementations that match the C version just in case somebody doesn't want to run the C version?Yes. Some of us cannot afford our own servers, and have to rely on our hosts installation of PHP, and the modules they choose to compile in. Some hosts will recompile PHP with a new extension if we ask nicely, but most won't. Writing them in C would restrict the use of these classes to those who had the C extension installed, cutting down the accessibility of the classes to the wider PHP community. Hopefully all hosting providers would choose to install the PEAR extensions, but one can never be sure... Just my view!
