That's what dl() is for. You don't need your ISP to do anything just to load a C extension. An ISP could theoretically turn that feature off, but they could also turn off any other functionality that would cause a PEAR component to break. This is one of the reason why I some times want CPAN in a trash can. The problem is not of turning some things on or of. The problem is to compile c-modules for the webserver. At the moment I can use PEAR classes only by coping the files. If important parts are only avaible in C you need to compile it. If your ISP running Solaris, a lot people run in trouble, because the most people havn't access to solaris machine. Remember at least, there are a lot of PHP-Programers using Windows out there.Exactly, but if everything is precompiled for most platforms (maybe some automated proces on target machines of contributors), signed/encrypted and stored in a centralized database for users to download, things could go a lot smoother for the average php end-user. But this goes somewhat beyond the scope of PEAR and I suppose should be integrated somewhere in the guts of php/zend...
