I thought I would throw this idea out there to see what you all think.
If you were not aware there is an open-source PHP extension for Macromedia
Ultradev 4.0 that allows for the same advantages when working with Ultradev
and PHP as their is with Ultradev and ASP/JSP and Cold Fusion. The problem
is that this extension uses the ADODB database abstration layer. Not to bash
that abstraction layer, but in the interests of those like myself who would
prefer to not change and add in another database abstraction layer (as I
already use phplib and PEAR DB in my applications), it would be nice to have
such functionality from within Macromedia Ultradev with the advantages of
PEAR's abstraction layer built in.
I think this would take PEAR, not to mention PHP a long way as Ultradev is
fast becomming the most popular web development software application if not
the most popular and having the tie between Ultradev and PEAR would make web
development on the front end with PHP truly as attractive if not more so
than ASP or even JSP is for many now.
In fact now that I think about it, most of the PEAR modules could eventually
have their own extensions from within Dreamweaver. I can see something in
the future perhaps where you can drop and drag pear components into a web
application as easily as you can currently drop in a photograph or an image
map.
I am interested in working on such a project myself, however I am consulting
with you guys to see what you think, and if there are any takers in helping
to develop such an extension.
From what I can tell, the current implimentation of this with the ADODB
database abstraction layer is open-source and GPL (read more at
http://www.interakt.ro/products/PHAkt/. Does
this mean we could pretty much
copy that and tweak it over to PEAR Specs?
Any thoughts, comments? Suggestions?
PHAkt is an open-source PHP extension for Macromedia Ultradev 4.0, allowing
PHP generation using the same techniques as when developing ASP/JSP/CF.
It grew from the initial implementation to a mature and robust extension,
with the help of the users community.
Using ADODB as the database connection layer, it allows a transparent
connection to over 11 database servers, thus presenting a great flexibility
to the developer.
PHAkt license is GPL, because we want to share it with the open source
community (we are using in production environments other GPLed softwares and
we are very pleased of them)
