I can sympathise with the way you feel towards Macromedia. However, keep in
mind at the time that Macromedia developed Ultradev, PHP was not nearly what
it is today, nor did we have PEAR. So it is hard to completely fault them at
this point, although I do share in your attitude toward Macromedia for not
making some inroads to the PHP community thus far.
Of course, while what I am thinking about might help Macromedia at one
level, it would in the end help PEAR much more by bringing it to a huge
audience and thus help PEAR and all that comes with that (PHP, Apache,
MySQL, Linux, etc). I believe it would also help those like myself who want
to use PEAR as a core component of their web development arsenal and at the
same time use industry standard tools.
Of course, I could argue that making PHP binaries, Apache Binaries, and
MySQL binaries available for Microsoft IIs would be helping the enemy to
succeed, but I feel in the end, the fact that we have done so has done more
good for the PHP and PEAR community than harm. All I am advocating is making
PEAR something that is more attractive and useful to a larger community of
users, and that in turn would hopefull attract many contributors to PEAR,
PHP etc.
