Hi,
I understand your concerns. Fortunately, by their very nature, errors are an uncommon occurrence, so I doubt performance is a real issue.
If there was one performance enhancement I would like to see, it would be to change
class PEAR_Error extends PEAR
to
class PEAR extends PEAR_Error
and to move the error-handling junk into PEAR_Error. Error classes do not need destructors and static properties. This btw, would not affect BC at all, taking a quick look through CVS.

It's backwards compatible to existing PEAR_Error, but adds much-needed features and constraints to existing error raising and error handling.I doesn't want to cool down your enthusiasm. :-) But i see performance problemes on the horizon. Maybe this will never occur with PHP 5.0. In early days (i wrote this very often today...), we had already discuss extending the error mechanismen - and had the conclusion, that this should be a part of PHP PEAR-Extension to avoid performance problems related to including and parsing.
