Seems like we talked cross-purposes. :-) I have no problems with this change
to happen before PEAR 2.0, but that is of course debateable.

Oh, you are right. I didn't even think of that. But I think we agree that
this shouldn't be hacked up by the package maintainers, but instead be done
"cleanly" by the installer.
