Well, I tried it. And it doesn't work. The warning about xmlrpc is given when it doesn't find the extension (php-extension) xmlrpc. What *exactly* is the error? It should be one of these: 1) "unable to load xmlrpc extension" If you're getting this one, it means that extension_loaded("xmlrpc") passed in call(), but then failed in call_epi() (the method that handles the xmlrpc extension in Remote.php). This would be very strange, indeed. 2) "For this remote PEAR operation you need to install the XML_RPC package" This happens when extension_loaded("xmlrpc") and include_once("XML/RPC.php") both fail. This would mean that neither the xmlrpc extension, nor the XML_RPC package are installed. In this case, there is no bug (in PEAR, at least... the Redhat RPM is another story) and you just need to install XML_RPC. Can you check phpinfo() to see if xmlrpc is installed, and "pear list" for XML_RPC?
Okay, you may argue that in most modern php-releases this should be standard ... or you should have compiled php yourself. But it was a stock RedHat 9-release with latest php from RedHat, which didn't have xmlrpc-support :-(Rawhide has 4.3.2 RPMs that work just fine w/ RH9, but it's a major hassle to resolve all of the dependencies yourself (I had to upgrade at least 40 packages). I'm not blowing off your issue, I'm just saying that you can upgrade to 4.3 if you want (phpDocumentor, etc.).
So I just thought that maybe some sort of wrapper could be used to use XML_RPC (php-implementation) for things like "pear list-upgrades" etc. if no xmlrpc-extension is present. This definitely already exists, but it appears to not be working for you. :-/ -- Marshall Roch http://pear.php.net/user/mroch
